Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum Mt Pleasant SC is one of Charleston’s most popular military attractions. Visitors can climb aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown, destroyer USS Laffey and submarine USS Clamagore to learn about American naval and maritime history. More!

These historic ships are a sight to see. But they require a lot of money to keep them afloat and up for tours.

The USS Laffey

Home to a famous aircraft carrier and two historic warships, Patriots Point is one of the nation’s most fascinating military museums. The complex is also home to the Medal of Honor Museum, a Cold War submariners’ memorial, and an immersive Vietnam Experience exhibit.

In the fall of 2008, the USS Laffey was in a precarious state. Her hull had developed five major leaks, and the museum didn’t have enough money to pay for repairs. It faced the choice of towing her out to sea or sinking her in the harbor, both expensive and risky options.

In 2009, the museum obtained a loan from the state and repaired the destroyer. The ship reopened to visitors in 2010, and guests can climb aboard and explore her many rooms and battle stations. A hologram demonstrates how her radar was used to search for submarines, and the crew’s radio transmissions create a tense atmosphere. Guests can even enter the fire control bunker and other areas.

The Vietnam Experience

The Vietnam Experience is a 2.5-acre exhibit that takes visitors inside the world of Navy heroism in one of America’s most contentious wars. It provides a vivid sense of what it was like for the two million Americans who served in the war. It also offers a place for those who never served to reflect upon their country’s involvement in the conflict.

The exhibit is a replica of a naval support base and features various areas, such as barracks, mess halls, helicopter landing zones, and more. It is also home to holograms that bring Marine officers to life to give visitors a first-hand glimpse of what it was really like for sailors and soldiers to serve in Vietnam.

Visiting the museum, Dee McDonald of Easley says she was surprised by the depth of the exhibits. She walked through a boiler room she hadn’t seen on previous visits and enjoyed the chance to climb aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. Browse around this site.

The Medal of Honor Museum

Located just across the harbor from Charleston, the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is a tourist attraction that includes the World War Two aircraft carrier Yorktown as well as the USS Laffey destroyer and the Vietnam Experience. It also features a Cold War submarine replica and the Medal of Honor Museum that celebrates Americans who earned our nation’s highest military honor.

While the site still needs to address a host of challenges, the museum has seen some successes recently. For example, a marine biology education center aboard Yorktown helps students learn about ocean life and the environment. And the Laffey just received a $13 million restoration.

Still, the biggest challenge for Patriots Point is preserving its ships while also growing its visitor numbers. A new museum that showcases the history of Congressional Medal of Honor winners will help with this goal. It will focus on those who have exhibited the values that America was founded on, like sacrifice, patriotism, and character. Next blog post.
