James Island County Park is a 643-acre Mecca of outdoor recreation. It has campgrounds, cottages, a waterpark, an obstacle course, crabbing and fishing docks, miles of trails, a dog park, and so much more! Read on to find out more.

You can stay a day or a weekend here. Enjoy! Here are a few tips to make your visit better:

Campground & Cottages

The Campground at James Island County Park offers 124 RV sites with full hookups and a well-stocked campground store for propane, ice, and firewood. The park also boasts an abundance of exceptional recreation offerings like saltwater fishing, crabbing, and a tidal creek fishing dock. A large lake features a water park open during the summer months and a dog beach where four-legged family members can play off-leash.

The Park hosts a variety of indoor and outdoor events year-round including family-friendly Reggae Night Concerts and Yappy Hour. The park also has an outdoor climbing wall and the Splash Zone Waterpark which requires paid admission.

For those looking to stay in a more comfortable lodging option than their RV, the park houses ten modern vacation cottages along the Stono River marsh. The cottages sleep up to eight guests and include linens, heating and air, and a kitchen. The cottages are a great option for families or groups traveling together and don’t want to rough it at the RV site.

Splash Zone Waterpark

Get ready to make a SPLASH this summer at Charleston County Parks’ newest waterpark!

Located within James Island County Park, Splash Zone is a seasonal water experience packed with summer fun for the entire family. It features two 200ft open & tube slides, a large leisure pool, a 500-foot-long lazy river, and a Caribbean play structure.

Other park amenities include a spray play fountain, picnic areas with grills and tables, a volleyball court, two landmark fishing piers, bike trails, historic McLeod Plantation Historic Site, an equestrian center, a campground, cottages, meeting & wedding facilities, golf course, and marina.

Guests can purchase season passes which include unlimited free admission to all three CCPRC-owned and operated waterparks: Splash Island Waterpark at Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park, Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park, and Discovery Island at James Island County Park. Each waterpark also offers a wide range of amenities including lounge chairs, lockers for securing belongings, and showers. A must-see!

Outdoor Climbing Wall

The park’s enormous 50-foot outdoor climbing wall is one of the Lowcountry’s tallest, offering more than 4,500 square feet of space for shimmying up to the summit. The climbing zone has 16 top ropes and auto-belays to help you hone your skills, and qualified staff is on hand to help guests reach new heights during their coastal adventure.

The massive park also has miles of paved trails for biking and hiking, kayak and bicycle rentals, a tidal creek fishing area, a playground, a spray/play fountain area, picnic areas, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and the Splash Zone waterpark. There’s even a golf course, disc golf, an 18-hole nature trail, historic site tours, barrier island recreation, and a slackline park.

Campers are in for a treat here, too, with plenty of sites that back up to ponds and some with concrete pads. There’s also a laundry facility, and the park offers a shuttle service into Charleston (fee required). It’s the perfect place to make your next getaway a true family vacation.

Reggae Nights Concert Series

The Reggae Nights Concert Summer Series features traditional old-school roots reggae with a new-school attitude in a beautiful outdoor setting. Bring your chairs or blanket and get ready to vibe! The event is open to all ages. Food, beverages, and souvenirs are available for purchase on-site. Children 12 and under and Gold Pass holders are free.

The first concert of the series will be held Friday, June 2 with Equal Rights performing. Event gates will open at 7:30 pm, music starts at 8 pm and concerts end at 11 pm.
